1. Why charter from Bar
Open-sea base, not the bay. Bar opens straight onto the Adriatic. The water has a real swell, the horizon is empty, and the summer wind is a steady northwest maestral. The afternoon sailing is reliable, not fluky like inside Boka. When you rent a yacht in Bar for the day you get the actual sea, with a moving deck under your feet and a real reach to the next anchorage.
The cheapest marina in the country. Marina Bar berths the same brands at lower daily rates than Porto Montenegro - the city is a working port, not a luxury district, and the day-charter pricing follows. A speedboat or a half-day motor cruise out of Bar usually lands 10-15 percent under the equivalent from Tivat.
The gateway south. From Bar a day's reach covers Ada Bojana, the twelve-kilometre Velika Plaža at the Albanian border, and - with the right paperwork - Sazan island and Saranda on the Albanian side. Most multi-day charters that go south of Budva start (or finish) here.
2. What is around Bar by boat
Velika Plaža Ulcinj. Twelve kilometres of fine sand running south from Ulcinj town to the Albanian border - by far the longest beach in the Adriatic. From a boat you reach the empty central section the day-trip buses never bother with, plus the brackish creek mouths where the river meets the sea.
Ada Bojana. The river-mouth island where the Bojana River empties into the sea. Traditional naturist territory, a row of fish restaurants on stilts over the river. Half an hour south of the Velika Plaža central section by motor boat.
Queen's Beach (Kraljičina Plaža). Hidden cove between Bar and Sutomore, named after the summer house of Queen Milena. Reachable by boat or a steep climb down. Empty most afternoons; the locals' first answer when you ask for somewhere quiet near town.
Sutomore, Čanj, Maljevik. Three sand beaches north of Bar within twenty minutes of the marina. Čanj is the family choice with a long curve of sand, Sutomore the busiest with promenade restaurants, Maljevik a small empty anchorage tucked behind the cliffs.
Stara Maslina (Old Olive). The 2400-year-old olive tree at Mirovica, three kilometres inland from the marina. You can see the grove from the water; if you want to walk to the tree itself it is a half-hour stroll from where the dinghy lands.
Petrovac and Bigova. The two anchorages on the way north toward Budva and Boka - Petrovac with its small red-roofed old town and two offshore islets, Bigova with the country's most glassy water and a single fish restaurant on the pier. Both make natural lunch stops on a north-bound multi-day leg.
3. Half day, full day or multi-day
Half day (3-4 hours). Marina Bar to Queen's Beach or north to Čanj, anchor, swim, return. The straightforward option for travelers staying in Bar or Sutomore - the boat is back at the pier in time for a late lunch in town.
Full day (7-8 hours). South to Velika Plaža Ulcinj and Ada Bojana, lunch at a stilt restaurant on the Bojana River, slow return with the afternoon maestral on the beam. The trip that justifies the drive to Bar from anywhere north.
Multi-day (3-7 nights). Where Bar earns its place. South-coast loop - Bar to Ulcinj to Sazan to Saranda and back - or the slow north route to Budva, Sveti Stefan, Petrovac, Tivat, dropping the boat in Porto Montenegro. The boats that suit it are catamarans and sailing yachts with two cabins or more. A Bar yacht rental from Saturday to Saturday is what most week-long charters from the south coast look like.
Sunset cruise (1.5-2 hours). Out of the marina into the open Adriatic, with the sun dropping straight into the sea and no mountain in the way - a properly different sunset from the Boka versions, where the light hits a wall.
4. Two routes I book most often
Route A - Queen's Beach and Čanj, half day
Marina Bar past the old port stone breakwater. Anchor at Queen's Beach - the small hidden cove next to the abandoned royal summer house - swim for an hour. Run north to Čanj for a second anchor and lunch on board, swim again on the long curve of sand. Slow return past Sutomore. The closest thing to a lazy morning on the southern Montenegrin coast - and the trip a lot of travelers book on day one before they decide whether to commit to the longer southern route.
Route B - Velika Plaža and Ada Bojana, full day
Marina Bar south past Ulcinj town - the cliffs above the old town are a sight on their own from the water. Anchor off the empty central kilometres of Velika Plaža for a long swim and lunch on board. Continue to the Bojana River mouth. Take the small tender up the river to one of the stilt restaurants for an afternoon coffee and a plate of grilled fish. Slow return as the maestral pushes you home with the engines down. The route that most week-long charters from Bar make a day of, even when the rest of the week goes the other direction.
5. Which boat fits your group
When you rent a boat in Bar the local Marina fleet is smaller than at Porto Montenegro - most of the catamarans and the larger motor yachts come down from Tivat for the booking, normally as part of a multi-day deal that finishes elsewhere. The choice still covers everything you need.
Speedboat or RIB (2-8 guests). Aktiv 605, Loving Speed RIB, and the local small-boat operators that work the Bar-Ulcinj coast. Half-day rates make sense for the Queen's Beach and Čanj loop; the long Ada Bojana route is more comfortable on a bigger boat.
Day-charter motor boat (6-10 guests). 38-42 ft cruisers with a galley and a shaded aft deck. The right size for the full-day southern route and a quiet open-sea afternoon.
Catamaran (10-13 guests). Bali Catspace, Lagoon 45, Aventura 36. The full-week choice from Bar - comfortable on the open swell, easy to handle on a multi-day southern itinerary.
Sailing yacht (4-12 guests). Jeanneau Sun Odyssey, Bavaria, Dufour 36, Dufour 46 Grand Large. Bar is where Boka-based charters often head for the real sailing - the maestral fills the sails every afternoon, the swell is real but not heavy, and the reaches to Petrovac, Ulcinj or Sazan are proper passages rather than lunch hops.
Larger motor yacht (50-100 ft). Princess, Azimut, Marquis. Marina Bar holds them comfortably on side-tie berths on the outer mole, and the rates run lower than the equivalent berth in Porto Montenegro. 6. Where you board in Bar
Marina Bar sits at the northern end of Bar town, five minutes' walk from the bus and train stations. Six piers, around 900 berths. Day charters embark at pier two or three; the larger motor yachts on the outer mole. You will see the pier number on the booking confirmation.
By train from Serbia. The overnight Belgrade-Bar train pulls in around 07:30, ten minutes' walk from the marina gate. A surprising share of summer charters from Bar begin the same morning - off the train, breakfast at the marina café, on the boat by ten.
Parking is easier than in Kotor or Budva. The public car park is at the southern end of the marina, paid by the hour, with plenty of space even in August.
7. Pricing and how to book
Bar is the cheapest of Montenegro's three charter bases. Rough starting day rates, high season, in euros:

Shoulder months (May, June, September, October) run 20 to 30 percent below summer peak. A skipper is normally EUR 150-200 per day and is required on most boats unless you hold an ICC or RYA Day Skipper licence; on the speedboats and RIBs it is included.
